New fish for tank (see more detail)?

I Went to aquatics today to get some fish for new tank as its been set up over 1 week , i was going to get 5 neon tetras, but the man in the shop said i were better off starting with Danios because they are more suitable for small starter fish , so i bought 5 of them 3 leopards , 1 zebra, and a small yellow one. Was his advice correct or was he just telling me rubbish ? Btw they are settling in very well i got lots of plastic plants and a little mountain ornament in their and they seem to love it.
