Genetics Problem - Tortiseshell Cats?
First of all, tortoise shell cats have the coloration they do both because they are heterozygous for the trait, and because of X inactivation. In females, during development, one of the two X chromosomes is turned off in each cell. They are turned off randomly and independently of each other, which accounts for the coloration of tortoise shell cats. The gene is on the X chromosome, so whichever gene the male got would be displayed, regardless. The only time when a male would be heterozygous, or even have two of the alleles, would be if they got 2 X chromosomes and one Y (XXY), which happens rarely.
