My windows 98 only has partial sound coming out of my computer?

when i play music with media player its skips and sounds scratchy but when i play some games on the net it plays fine. or when i play the regular cd player agian it plays fine. i was told to download a sound blaster card but i cant figure it out. if anyone has suggestions im open.
