What are the disadvantages of using hard water in boilers?

You're going to foul it. Hard water has lots of minerals in it, so when it evaporates it leaves those minerals behind (think water spots on your car after you've washed it). Those minerals build up to become insulation on your superheater tubes (fouling), so you don't transfer as much heat into your water.
